Heating and cooling buildings are responsible for 36% of Europe’s CO2 emissions, making them a major contributor to climate change. To address this, we need smarter, more sustainable solutions. That’s where GHEtool Cloud, the world’s first cloud-based borefield sizing tool, comes in.

What is GHEtool Cloud?
GHEtool Cloud is a powerful tool that simplifies the design of geothermal borefields—underground systems that store heat in the summer and cold in the winter. These borefields, combined with ground-source heat pumps, are the most sustainable way to heat and cool buildings, reducing CO2 emissions while being highly energy-efficient.

However, designing these borefields is incredibly complex. If they’re not designed properly, they can harm underground ecosystems by overheating or freezing the ground. GHEtool Cloud ensures this doesn’t happen. It uses the latest scientific models to help designers create efficient systems that stay within safe temperature limits, preventing environmental damage.

How Does GHEtool Cloud Make a Difference?
GHEtool Cloud goes beyond just designing borefields. It offers solutions for the growing complexity of modern buildings and their increasing cooling needs. For example, by combining active cooling (using a heat pump) with passive cooling (directly extracting cold from the ground), GHEtool can reduce investment costs by up to 50% while maintaining 2–3 times higher efficiency than traditional air-source heat pumps. This approach lowers CO2 emissions, reduces noise pollution, and adapts systems for hotter summers—all while remaining economically feasible.

Additionally, surplus heat from summer can even be used for innovative applications like de-icing roads, improving safety, and avoiding road salt pollution.

A Broader Impact
GHEtool Cloud doesn’t just stop at designing borefields. It’s a catalyst for innovation in the geothermal industry. By being open-source, it allows universities and researchers worldwide to use and improve its models. This transparency accelerates progress in the sector and helps train the next generation of geothermal designers.

We’ve also partnered with companies to integrate new geothermal solutions into GHEtool Cloud, ensuring the industry has access to the latest innovations. This collaborative approach creates a ripple effect, encouraging more businesses to adopt sustainable practices.

Measurable Results
Since its launch, GHEtool Cloud has already been used to design over 250 geothermal projects, resulting in systems capable of delivering 22 GWh of heating and 11 GWh of cooling. These systems reduce CO2 emissions by thousands of tons annually. Looking ahead, our goal is to multiply this impact fivefold within the next year, expanding internationally and supporting even more sustainable projects.

Our mission
GHEtool Cloud is more than just a tool—it’s a solution to one of the biggest challenges of our time. By making geothermal systems easier to design, it paves the way for a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Together, we can heat and cool buildings sustainably, protecting the planet for future generations.
