Heating and cooling buildings are responsible for 36% of Europe’s CO2 emissions, making them one of the biggest contributors to climate change. Solving this challenge requires smarter and more sustainable solutions. That is where GHEtool Cloud comes in.

GHEtool Cloud is the world’s first cloud based software for designing geothermal borefields, underground systems that store heat in summer and cold in winter. Combined with ground source heat pumps, these systems are the most sustainable way to heat and cool buildings, with very high energy efficiency and low emissions.

Designing geothermal borefields, however, is extremely complex. If done incorrectly, systems can underperform or even damage underground ecosystems by overheating or freezing the ground. GHEtool Cloud prevents this by using state of the art scientific models that help designers create efficient systems while keeping ground temperatures within safe limits.

GHEtool Cloud goes beyond standard design. It helps engineers respond to the growing cooling demand of modern buildings by intelligently combining active and passive cooling. This can reduce investment costs by up to 50% while maintaining an efficiency that is two to three times higher than conventional air source heat pumps. The result is lower CO2 emissions, less noise, and buildings that are better adapted to hotter summers. In some cases, surplus summer heat can even be reused for applications such as de icing roads, improving safety while avoiding salt pollution.

Our impact goes further than software alone. GHEtool Cloud is supported by the largest geothermal design knowledge base in the world, freely accessible to professionals, students, and researchers. With hundreds of pages of technical content and hours of educational material, we help designers not only calculate systems, but truly understand them. This open and educational approach accelerates innovation and prepares the next generation of geothermal experts.

Since its launch, GHEtool Cloud has already been used to design more than 3400 geothermal projects, representing 299 GWh of heating and 150 GWh of cooling capacity. These projects reduce CO2 emissions by thousands of tons every year. Our ambition is to multiply this impact in the coming years by expanding internationally and supporting the transition to sustainable heating and cooling worldwide.

GHEtool Cloud is more than a tool. It is a practical way to tackle one of today’s biggest climate challenges. Together, we can heat and cool buildings sustainably and protect the planet for future generations.
